An introduction to the notion of representation in architecture: The seminar aims at offering a basic knowledge on the mediation and representation of architecture and its discontents – and the larger idea of our surroundings as – potentially – mediated through architecture, photography, and publications. Through a series of simple exercises, the students will get an introduction into the basics of spatial perception, the use of photography, graphic design, and ultimately an insight into different approaches and strategies using publishing and publications.
On the first meeting of 07.10.2022 Thomas Mayfried and Erica Overmeer will share and analyse with the students examples of their own photography, design, and publishing practice. For this first meeting all partipiciants will have to bring 1 to 3 favourite books of their own choice that they think are exemplary related to the subject of architectural representation and communication. We will collectively discuss and analyse these choices.
On the second date of 10.11.2022 we will focus on different strategies and notions of observation, perception, depiction, and representation – working on site, either in Esch or Belval. Participants are asked to bring a note block, pen, and a camera (whatever format, a mobile phone camera is fine, too).
On the third date of 11.11.2022, we will conclude with a review and selection of the acquired and produced materials. We will develop and realise a concept for a small presentation and vernissage in the Esch Clinic spaces on the same evening.
