Seminar: Fiction in Architecture
Fall Semester 2022
Soil Work
by Arturas Certovas and Heiða Sigrún Pálsdóttir
Lecturer: Carole Schmit
For the Seminar Fiction in Architecture led by Carole Schmit, the students Arturas Certovas and Heiða Sigrún Pálsdóttir propose an artistic representation of the infinitely small particles that conform to the ground below our feet, both hidden and forgotten. By zooming into them they created a pixelized oversized view of the inner life of the polluted soil in Belval, composed of many different particles, including heavy metals. The students’ work tried to establish a metaphorical link to Carl Jung’s concept of the shadow self and reveal paradoxically in multiple colors the dark side of the ground.
