Prof. Robert Thum + Prof. Marion Goerdt on the example of the Ahr Valley reconstruction.
According to the UN as a result of man-made climate change catastrophes like the one in the Ahr Valley will increasingly affect also Europe, its natural environment as well as its citizens. How can we adapt our landscapes and habitats to this changing situation? What are the alternatives of re-building: complete reconstruction or renaturation? Master's students from two partner universities in Rhineland-Palatinate and Luxembourg pursued this question over the course of one semester. Resisting the reflex of proposing immediate solutions, the aim was first to analyse different phenomena of this complex region before formulating a hypothesis. The results are shown at Market 9. After the shock/trauma a broader public debate on reconstruction is needed that goes beyond individual expert opinions.
